The gold medal winning, world record breaking run of Usain Bolt in the 200 meters men at the Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing, China (19.30 seconds) further strengthened by the Olympic record breaking run of Melanie Walker in the 400 meters hurdles final (54.62), sparked off wild celebrations starting in Usain’s hometown of Sherwood Content, near Falmouth in Trelawny. There was a massive motorcade and partying throughout the day and night.
Productivity was at its lowest in history as almost everyone took to the streets in wild celebrations that end with a street dance in Sherwood. i was too tired to make it to Sherwood in the night but here are some photos taken during the day,

Some of Jamaica’s leading female reggae dancehall artistes were on show at Dancehall Divas in Concert at Club Nazz in Falmouth, Jamaica. The lin-up included Diva, Miss Thing, Sasha, Spice, D’Angel and the Queen of Dancehall herself, the prolific hit machine Marion Hall, aka Lady Saw. Noticeably absent were Patra, Lady G and current heavyweight Macka Diamond. It was a girl’s show promoted by female for females. As such, the predominantly female audience had a ball listening to the mainly vulgar, sexual lyrics, riddled with expletives. much to the delight of the crowd. They were no different from the men in terms of their vulgarity, often times clutching their genitalia while performing. All artistes put in great performances but as is the norm, Lady Saw was the creme de la creme. D’Angel (and Sasha to a lesser extent) must be commended for keeping it clean.

Falmouth has one of the largest collection of buildings from the Georgian era in the Caribbean. Today I went for a walk in the north of the town to take photos of some of them. They have all been placed in a Falmouth Buildings page, which is a sub-page of the Falmouth page. I will post a few here.

House on Trelawny Street now used as an office.

Posted this on flickr a while back, but each time I see it, I get really annoyed so I guess I’ll pass on the annoyance to you. This is an old grandfather gambling with little kids at the Hague Agricultural Show in Jamaica. The citizens and police are all around and no one bothers him. Suffice to say, most of his customers are children.

Here is another, which shows how acceptable it is. This man is even displaying sweets for sale to his target market….children. The really young ones are partially hidden to the left. Such a shame.

While trying to solve my nextgen problem (re: the previous post), I saw several options for embedding photo galleries in WordPress and was pleasantly surprised with the photo gallery feature that comes with WordPress 2.5. It can be quite handy to post multiple photos to a blog without taking up as much space as I now use. Large thumbnails can be used for display and clicking will reveal the larger size. I am putting this feature to the test with some images I uploaded to the gallery.
Looks quite attractive! Using a gallery for posts is definitely the way to go. At least it will ensure that the page loads in a shorter time. The major ommisson: no “Previous” or “Next” button.
Follow Up :
Got this line of coding above the photo when I clicked on the thumbnail and opened up the medium size:
“s // This lets us style narrow icons speciall”
In addition, after clicking on the medium size and getting the large, clicking on the large to go back to medium sometimes brought up a small white box in the top left of the browser. It maybe theme related but a definite no-no for me.
Follow Up 2:
I tried inserting images from nextgen gallery into the post and got the same white box error above. After troubleshooting, I found out Snap Shot was causing a conflict which was resolved by removing Snap Shot. The script output however, still remains.

These three black and white photos were taken at a Business House football (soccer) match in Falmouth. The young lady was unaware that I was taking the shots which made them look really natural and she was quite surprised when I showed her.

These are some photos I took over the past few days I haven’t posted.
CVM Television is on a 15th Anniversary tour of Jamaica. Here are a couple of shots from their stop in Falmouth:

The kids from left: Tiauna (my daughter), Sarah-Anna (my neice), Khalil (my son) and Sammie (my nephew). Standing tall is my sister Bernadette.

Khalil with his prize for placing first in class.

Deep in thought.

I haven’t posted in a while as I’m working on a community site using Xoops. Although it is a relatively easy application to understand, it takes a lot of work to put the site together. I hope to be up and running officially in a week.
I have to take time to congratulate my son for achieving first place in his class. its a mystery how such a trouble maker can do so consistently well in school :). He was awarded at the recent prize-giving ceremony at his school, Hague Primary. Congratulations son!

Just found a handy piece of code that allows you to embed a flickr slideshow in a page or post. Here is how you can do it. I will change the criteria periodically. Right now it is set to show all my photos tagged “jamaica”. You will need to get your flickr ID for it to work. You can get it here.
You may click on the Flickr Slideshow page link in the header of this site to see it at work.
Thanks to Paul Stamatiou.
