Embed Flickr Slideshow In a Page or Post

Just found a handy piece of code that allows you to embed a flickr slideshow in a page or post. Here is how you can do it. I will change the criteria periodically. Right now it is set to show all my photos tagged “jamaica”. You will need to get your flickr ID for it to work. You can get it here.

You may click on the Flickr Slideshow page link in the header of this site to see it at work.

Thanks to Paul Stamatiou.

Jamaica (Reggae Boyz) defeat The Bahamas

Jamaica’s National Football team (Reggae Boyz) defeated Bahamas 6-0 at the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium on Wednesday, 18th June. It was a real one-sided affair where the Bahamas did not have one shot on target. It was the first football game held at the complex which was originally built for the Cricket World Cup 2007.

Count Hector

Count Hector has been performing since at least the 1960’s. He is famous for
singing on almost every amateur show since then (even though he can’t
sing)……making up his own words to songs. His most famous mistake made Larry
Graham’s song “One In A Million”into “A Worm In A Melon.” Needless to say, he
has provided many a laugh. As a result, he is loved by all who have known him
over the years.

He is also famous for his “interesting” facial features which has made him
probably the most photographed person in Falmouth. Big up Hector!!

Lightroom Before & After Mode

While working in Develop mode, you may want to see a quick before & after
to judge the effects of your adjustments. Simply press the BACKSLASH key (\) and
it displays the before photo (with the word “Before”,appearing in the bottom
right corner of the image), press it again and it shows the after photo. Very useful to judge whether adjustments are having the desired result.

Happy (belated) Birthday, Khalil!

Tuesday June 3rd was my younger son’s 7th birthday. To commemorate it, a party was held in his classroom which seems to be the new trend.

Mastering Black & White Digital Photography

Mastering Black & White Digital Photography by Michael Freeman is an excellent black & white book. It shows several ways to convert color photos into great looking black & whites. It includes everything from “seeing in black & white” (before actually taking the photograph), shooting the photo, editing, adding effects, right up to the stage of the actual print.

Mastering Black White

What I like about the book is that each chapter is short and to the point, averaging only two pages; yet there are diagrams and before & after photos on almost every page. The emphasis is therefore placed on illustrations and not wordiness so the subject matter is easy to grasp. The downside is that the before and afters are hard to differentiate, probably caused by the quality of the print.

The chapters are so well laid out and concise, it will prove a valuable reference book. Indeed, there is so much to learn it will be some time yet before everything gets riveted in my “tough” brain.

You will need to have Photoshop as most exercises are based on this application. Photoshop Elements will do for some, but the full Photoshop program will be needed for most.

Using what I learnt, I took this low contrast color photo of my daughter at the beach and converted it into black & white.

Tiauna Unedited

I used Adobe Photoshop CS2 and started by using the Levels Adjustment Layer and adjusting the RED, GREEN & Blue channels individually.

The next step was to use the Channel Mixer, firstly by ticking “Monochrome” to make Black & White adjustments. The RED, GREEN & BLUE channels were adjusted and tweaked until I was satisfied with the results. This is where the book is helpful. It teaches you how to know what percentage of each channel (RED, GREEN or BLUE) to use to get your desired effect.

I then added some contrast (using an Adjustment Layer) and sharpening (by copying the background and using Unsharp Mask). This was the result:

Tiauna Black & White

Easily, a much better looking finish than the original.

First Graders

First Graders

For some reason, birds seem to like my son’s school so whenever I go to pick him up, I am always on the alert. I tried taking about 30 bird photos with the Tamron 70-300mm lens, but as usual, the slow focusing caused problems with sharpness. however it had no such problems with the kids. This is a sample image. CLICK ON TITLE FOR LARGER VIEW.
